WhiskeyBreath declares that it is an evening of "songs, booze & lovers" and while acoustic guitars seem to be the weapon of choice in this room, it is not your typical dry, East Village Songwriter night. The high quality of the guest artists, hand picked each week by Rick Royale & Alexander Lowry, mixed with the exclusive, but irreverent atmosphere and the stupidly cheap drinks make WhiskeyBreath the most fun you can have without ending up in hand-cuffs (well, except that one time...). The sets are played short, the drinks are poured long and the atmosphere gets loose. Being a top notch talent is a given in this crowd and it is not uncommon, as the night starts blurring into the next day, to see a respected out of town guest get up and play a few songs or some of the brilliant, local crew joining in on each other's songs. This is as fun for the casual observers as it is for the well seasoned musicians that fill the downstairs couches at LaiLa each week. California transplant Rick Royale, described by Vodka Magazine as an "artist and visionary", plays songs off his new release "At the End of Sunset" (www.popomatic.com) as well as delves into his extensive catalogue of original material while generally instigating all sorts of tom foolery Kansas City native come Brooklyn Local, Alexander Lowry is, as Jay Goettelmann of Liberated Matter Entertainment said, "an excellent singer/songwriter who paints vivid images with his unique voice, solid and smooth while suggesting vulnerability." and he can sure put back those scotches!
